CSD Registration Tutorial: Register as a Government Supplier
Learn how to prepare, complete and check your Central Supplier Database registration. This guided lesson takes you from your first user account to a supplier report you can read and maintain.
What you will learn
- Prepare the correct supplier information and supporting records.
- Separate your CSD user account from the supplier profile.
- Complete registration, inspect verification results and retrieve your report.
- Identify a missing or inconsistent record and plan the next action.
1. Understand what you are registering
The Central Supplier Database, or CSD, holds supplier information used by South African organs of state. Registration records your interest in supplying government. It does not award a contract, replace a tender response or confirm that every requirement of a particular buyer has been met. Start with the official CSD website and its guidance.
There are two different records in this lesson: the user who logs in, and the supplier whose business information is captured. A working login is the beginning of the process. Your learning outcome is to produce a submitted supplier record, retrieve the report and explain its verification results.
This lesson follows the foundation covered in the Fund The People and SALGA Week 1 webinar: company registration and supplier readiness. If you are registering a company, first complete our CIPC registration lesson. If you still need a suitable company account, use our business banking tutorial.
2. Prepare your information and document checklist
The official process asks for information according to supplier type. Use the list below as a preparation pack, then follow the actual fields and requests shown for your supplier. A document that helps you enter accurate details is not necessarily an upload required from every applicant.
Make a preparation sheet with “available”, “needs correction” and “not applicable” columns. Put an owner beside each missing item. For a registered company, check the company’s particulars rather than automatically using a director’s personal banking or tax records.
3. Create and activate your CSD user account
Open the official site and use its Register route. Complete the user details accurately, activate through the email link and follow the cellphone OTP step described in CSD’s registration instructions. Keep your login information private.
- Confirm that you can access the email and cellphone you are supplying.
- Enter your own user information and review it before proceeding.
- Complete the activation instructions sent by the official service.
- Log in and check that you can reach supplier administration.
If an activation message is missing, inspect your spam folder and the entered contact particulars. Use the service’s resend or support route where available. Do not keep creating accounts in the hope that one will bypass an unresolved identity or contact problem.
4. Complete the supplier profile deliberately
From supplier administration, use the Add Supplier route and identify the correct supplier type. Work through identification and the applicable contact, address, tax, director/member, commodity, notification and B-BBEE sections. Screen labels can change; use the current official prompts alongside the lesson.
Prepare each answer from an existing record. Save progress as you work and review what the system retrieves automatically. If a retrieved company detail looks wrong, check the underlying company record and the official correction route. Typing a preferred version into an unrelated field does not correct the source.
Business identity
Which legal supplier is being recorded? Can another person trace your answer back to its registration or identity record?
Reachable contacts
Who checks procurement messages, and can that person respond? Use contact details the business actively maintains.
For every section, ask: “What evidence supports this value?” That habit makes it easier to investigate a later verification problem.
5. Check banking, tax and related verification
Entering bank details and receiving a successful banking result are separate steps. Check the exact account particulars against the bank’s evidence, including the account holder. The official registration page advises allowing time for banking verification; avoid treating submission as instant verification.
A tax number also differs from current tax compliance. Review the actual result shown for the supplier and address an underlying tax issue through SARS. Keep a short log of the result, date checked, correction made and the next check. Use our CSD status and banking verification guide for a focused investigation.
6. Choose accurate commodities and delivery locations
CSD explains that buyers use commodity information to search for goods and services, and that delivery locations should be accurate. Choose what your business can actually supply. A broad list of categories is not evidence that you have stock, people, equipment or delivery capacity for every category.
For practice, describe one service in ordinary language, identify the nearest relevant classification and write the area you can reliably serve. Then test the description against a real specification. “Office support” may be too broad to establish whether you supply stationery, maintain printers or provide temporary staff.
7. Review, submit and retrieve the supplier report
Use the overview to find outstanding information, correct it and submit the completed profile. CSD’s process identifies a supplier number and unique registration reference as registration outputs. Retain the references securely and use the registration-report route provided by the system.
- Review legal identity, contact, banking and commodity entries against your preparation sheet.
- Resolve outstanding required information in the overview.
- Submit and retain the confirmation and reference details.
- Retrieve the report and inspect the supplier identity and individual results.
- Record the date you checked it and the action for any unresolved item.
Read the report rather than only downloading it. Check that it represents the intended supplier and that the information is suitable for the buyer’s actual requirements. Keep references and identity particulars out of screenshots you share publicly.
8. Complete a supplier-readiness exercise
Use this fictional example to practise reading evidence. A company has correct registration particulars, a working CSD login and a downloaded report. Its contact email belongs to someone who has left, its banking result is unresolved and its commodity list includes services it cannot deliver.
| Finding | Useful action | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Inactive contact | Update the authorised business contact through the appropriate route. | A checked, reachable contact record. |
| Unresolved banking | Compare account particulars and seek official assistance if needed. | Bank evidence and the subsequent verification result. |
| Unsupported commodities | Review the classifications against actual capacity. | A realistic supply and delivery description. |
Your explanation should say what is wrong, where it should be corrected and how you will check the outcome. “Registered on CSD” is too broad to explain those three outstanding tasks.
9. Keep the record useful after registration
Assign someone to maintain the supplier record when contacts, addresses, banking, ownership or supply activities change. Recheck it before an important procurement response. A saved report shows the information available when it was produced; it is not a promise that every later detail remains unchanged.
Keep a dated administration folder with current evidence and a simple change log. Restrict access to people who need it. If you use an adviser, understand the work they perform and retain appropriate business control of the account. Official CSD self-registration and a third party’s assistance service are different arrangements.
Once your record has been checked, continue to the government tender application tutorial. That lesson teaches you to assess a particular bid, build its document pack and follow its submission instructions.

CSD registration questions and answers
Is a CSD login the same as supplier registration?
No. The user account lets you access the service. You must also complete and submit the intended supplier profile, retain its references and check the report. Use separate checkpoints so you can explain precisely how far you have progressed.
Do I need a registered company for every CSD supplier type?
CSD accommodates different supplier types. Use the identification information applicable to the actual supplier. This tutorial’s company examples assume an existing registered company; do not invent a company registration number for a different legitimate supplier type.
Which documents should I have ready?
Keep accurate identity, company, contact, address, bank and applicable tax records available, together with relevant ownership, B-BBEE and accreditation evidence. The current supplier type and official prompts determine what is requested. Preparation evidence and a compulsory upload are not always the same thing.
Can I enter my personal account for a company supplier?
Check the correct legal account holder and the applicable CSD rules. A director and a company are different identities. Use the company’s bank evidence for the company example in this lesson and obtain official guidance if the account arrangement is unclear.
Does a supplier number mean every verification passed?
A reference identifies the record. Read the individual results and outstanding information in the actual report. Explain which checks have been completed and which require action instead of treating one number as proof of every condition.
Does CSD registration guarantee a government tender?
Registration expresses interest in supplying government and makes supplier information available. Each tender still has its own eligibility, specification, evaluation and submission requirements. You must prepare the required response and follow the buyer’s instructions.
How should I investigate a banking problem?
Compare the supplier identity and account particulars against the bank’s confirmation. Record the displayed result, resolve the underlying issue and use official assistance where needed. Our separate banking-verification guide develops that investigation without repeating the whole registration lesson.
What if my business supplies several services?
Select relevant classifications supported by actual capacity and realistic delivery areas. Keep an explanation of what you supply and how you deliver it. Avoid selecting unrelated categories simply to appear in more searches.
Can Fund The People complete official registration for me?
This page is an educational tutorial. Official registration and verification happen through CSD and the relevant institutions. Use the educational enquiry form to ask about the lesson and the official support route for account-specific decisions.
What should I do after finishing this lesson?
Retrieve and read the report, resolve outstanding results, keep current evidence and complete the tender application lesson. If you later hold an eligible awarded transaction, explore our funding requirements and the separate four-step application below.
Quick quiz: check your learning
Answer all five questions, then review the explanations. Your score is a learning check, not an official certificate or a compliance assessment. No name, email or account information is required. Scores stay in your browser unless you choose to share them.
