Invoice Funding in South Africa: How Invoice Discounting Solutions Work

Invoice funding provides earlier access to part of an eligible unpaid receivable. At Fund The People, this route is delivered through our Invoice Discounting Solutions for completed, accepted and unpaid government or municipal tender invoices. Your business has delivered the goods or services, but the public-sector buyer pays later under the agreed terms. Our team assesses the current balance, acceptance evidence and proposed settlement arrangements.

The invoice is not sold or funded merely because it exists. Fund The People assesses the underlying transaction directly, verifies the unpaid amount and sets out the proposed advance, charges and settlement route in the written offer.

Fund The People provides funding approval within 48 hours for complete qualifying applications. This is the approval decision; funds release follows completed verification, signed terms and the agreed payment arrangements.

This guide explains the process. Check our Invoice Discounting Solutions eligibility requirements for buyer and document checks, or use the invoice approval and payment timeline to plan when each stage can be completed.

Step 1 Confirm completed delivery

Match the invoice with the customer’s order or contract and the relevant delivery or acceptance record. Resolve differences in names, quantities, milestone values and tax treatment before asking for an advance.

Step 2 Verify the debtor and receivable

The provider may contact the customer through an official channel to confirm the invoice, due date and payment instructions. Disputes, credit notes, retentions and earlier payments change the amount reasonably expected.

Step 3 Review the proposed advance

The offer should show the invoice amount, percentage advanced, deductions, reserve and net cash available. Read how charges accrue and what happens if the customer pays after the expected date.

Step 4 Accept the payment structure

The agreement sets out where the customer must pay and whether the arrangement is disclosed. Invoice discounting is not automatically confidential. Confirm any notice or acknowledgement required from the debtor.

Step 5 Reconcile customer payment

When the customer pays, the receipt is allocated according to the agreement. The advance and charges are settled, and any remaining reserve is released if the conditions are met. Compare the final statement with the actual receipt and credit activity.

What invoice discounting does not do

  • It does not turn incomplete work into an eligible invoice.
  • It does not remove the effect of a customer dispute.
  • It does not guarantee that the debtor pays on time.
  • It does not replace careful review of recourse and security terms.

Keep the accounting trail clear

Record the advance as finance rather than new sales revenue, reconcile charges and track the final customer receipt. Ask the business’s accountant how the specific arrangement should be recorded and disclosed.

Discuss an outstanding invoice

For an eligible invoice linked to a deal value of at least R250,000 and more, bring the order, delivery evidence, invoice and customer terms to our Invoice Discounting Solutions.
