Invoice Discounting Definition: Key Terms Explained

Invoice discounting is a form of receivables finance in which a business obtains funding against eligible unpaid customer invoices. It brings forward part of the expected receipt, subject to the provider’s assessment and the agreed charges and obligations.

The important distinction is between a sale recorded in your accounts and money available in your bank account. An invoice can show that a customer owes the business money while the cash is still unavailable for the next supplier payment.

For a complete and eligible application, Fund The People targets a funding turnaround within 48 hours, subject to document, buyer, supplier and transaction verification. The actual timing depends on the information required for the specific transaction.

What is a receivable?

A trade receivable is an amount owed by a customer for goods or services supplied on credit. The customer is often called the debtor; your business is the supplier. A receivables ledger records amounts owed, due dates, receipts and adjustments.

An invoice documents the claim for payment, but the underlying order, delivery and acceptance records help establish what the customer actually owes. If part of the work is disputed or a credit note reduces the bill, the amount available for assessment may differ from the original invoice total.

Advance, reserve and net cash: three different figures

The advance is the initial funding amount agreed against the eligible invoice. The reserve, where the arrangement uses one, is the portion held back until settlement. Net cash is what reaches the business after any deductions made at release.

Consider a fictional R300,000 invoice. If an arrangement advances R240,000 and deducts R6,000 upfront, the business receives R234,000 at that stage. The remaining R60,000 is not automatically extra profit or immediately available cash: its release depends on the agreement, the customer payment and further deductions.

These amounts illustrate the terms, not a standard funding ratio or a quotation. Ask for the complete settlement calculation before comparing the amount offered with the cash your business needs.

What does recourse mean?

Recourse concerns the circumstances in which the provider can require your business to repay or make good an unpaid amount. The detail matters: customer insolvency, a delivery dispute, an invalid invoice and a breach of agreement may be treated differently.

A product described as non-recourse should still be read carefully. The label alone does not establish that every payment problem is covered. Identify the relevant conditions and exceptions in the proposed agreement and clarify anything you do not understand before signing.

Assignment, collection and customer disclosure

An assignment concerns rights in the receivable. Collection concerns who follows up the payment and where it is received. Disclosure concerns what the customer is told about the funding arrangement. These are related questions, but they describe different responsibilities.

Invoice discounting should not be defined as automatically secret from customers. Some arrangements involve customer confirmation or changed payment instructions. Sourcefin’s published invoice discounting process, for example, includes invoice verification with the customer and payment follow-up. Check the actual product rather than relying on a general label.

How is it different from purchase order funding?

The timing of the cash gap is the useful distinction. Purchase order funding concerns costs needed to fulfil a confirmed order before delivery and customer payment. Invoice discounting concerns an eligible receivable after the goods or services have been supplied and invoiced.

A business may encounter both stages during its trading cycle, but that does not mean it can finance the same obligation twice. Disclose existing facilities and discuss how any earlier funding will be settled. Read about our Purchase Order Funding Solutions when supplier costs are due before the work is completed.

How is it different from invoice factoring?

Invoice factoring commonly combines finance with receivables administration or collection services. Invoice discounting is often described as leaving more ledger administration with the business. In practice, provider structures differ, so the name alone is not enough to determine confidentiality, customer contact or repayment obligations.

Compare the functions in writing: which invoices are covered, who maintains the ledger, who contacts customers, who receives payment and who carries each risk. This is more useful than choosing a facility solely because it uses one label rather than another.

What invoice discounting changes in a business

It can change the timing of available cash. It does not create a new sale, remove the obligation to complete acceptable work or guarantee the customer’s payment. Charges reduce the cash retained from the transaction, so the benefit should be assessed against the purpose and duration of the funding gap.
